A solar system can be producing power on a clear day and still have a fault, safety concern or grid-compliance issue developing in the background. That is why system inspection vs compliance testing is not an either-or choice for many Canberra solar owners. They serve different purposes, and knowing the difference helps you book the right service before a small issue becomes lost generation, an expensive repair or a problem with your network requirements.
A system inspection looks at the overall condition and performance of your solar installation. Compliance testing has a narrower but critical job: confirming equipment, particularly the inverter, operates safely and responds correctly when the grid supply is interrupted. Both protect your investment, but they answer different questions.
System inspection vs compliance testing: the practical difference
Think of a system inspection as a health check for your whole solar system. The aim is to identify wear, damage, deterioration and performance concerns that may be reducing output or creating a future fault. It considers the panels, mounting hardware, wiring, isolators, inverter and visible system condition as a connected installation.
Compliance testing is a prescribed test of whether the system meets a specific operational safety requirement. For many existing systems, this means anti-islanding testing. This protects electrical workers and the network from a solar system continuing to feed electricity into lines that should be de-energised.

What a solar system inspection is designed to find
A quality inspection is about more than checking whether the inverter screen is on. Solar systems live outside in heat, rain, wind, frost and hail. Over time, those conditions can affect components that are not obvious from ground level or from an app showing daily generation.
An electrician-led inspection generally assesses the visible condition of the array and mounting system, panel condition, cabling, conduit, isolators, inverter operation and signs of water ingress or heat damage. It also looks for practical indicators of underperformance, such as a string producing less than expected, recurring inverter error messages or generation that no longer matches the systemโs usual pattern.
Common issues found during inspections include cracked panels after hail, loose or degraded cable protection, damaged rooftop isolators, UV-affected wiring, corrosion, water ingress and inverter faults. During anti-islanding testing, a qualified electrician tests the inverterโs response to a loss of grid supply. The inverter must stop exporting electricity quickly enough to meet the applicable requirements. Test results are recorded, and the required outcome can be provided to the network where applicable.
This test matters because solar inverters are designed to work alongside the grid. If the street supply goes down, the inverter must disconnect rather than keep energising the local network. A system that does not respond correctly can create a serious hazard for line workers and may not meet its connection obligations.
Compliance testing is not a full condition report
A passed anti-islanding test is good news, but it does not mean every component of the solar system is in perfect condition. It does not, by itself, confirm that panels are free of hail damage, roof penetrations remain weatherproof or DC isolators are in sound physical condition.
The reverse is also true. An inspection may show that your system appears well maintained, but it does not replace a formal anti-islanding test when one has been requested. If you have received a network notice, arrange the required testing by the stated due date.

There are situations where both services are the sensible option. An older installation that has been called up for anti-islanding testing may also benefit from a condition assessment while a qualified electrician is on site. Likewise, a system inspected after hail may need separate compliance testing if the network has issued a notice. Combining the work can provide a more complete view, but the required tests and reporting should still be clearly identified.
Why waiting can cost more than testing
Solar faults are not always dramatic. A slightly damaged connector, moisture entering an isolator or a panel fault affecting one string may leave the system operating at reduced capacity rather than stopping altogether. You may still see generation each day while losing a meaningful amount of output over a year.
Safety concerns can also develop gradually. Electrical enclosures and cables exposed to weather need periodic attention, especially on systems installed many years ago or affected by hail and temperature extremes. Leaving faults until the inverter fails completely can mean more downtime and fewer repair options.
Compliance has its own cost of delay. If testing is requested by the network, missing the deadline can create avoidable follow-up work and uncertainty about your grid connection. Prompt testing gives you a documented result and a clear next step if the inverter does not pass.

For compliance work, ask whether anti-islanding testing is included, how the result is recorded and whether the relevant notification process is handled. For an inspection, ask what parts of the system will be assessed and whether the service includes fault finding if an issue is identified.
Transparent scope matters. A basic compliance test may be exactly what you need after a network notice. A full system health check takes a broader look and may be more appropriate where performance, age or weather damage is the concern. The right choice depends on the reason you are booking, not on choosing the largest package by default.
