If your solar system is quietly producing power each day, it is easy to assume everything is fine. The trouble is that many owners only start asking when to service solar panels after a bill jumps, an inverter throws a fault, or storm damage becomes obvious. By then, the system may already have been underperforming for months.

Solar does not need constant attention, but it does need periodic testing and inspection. Panels, isolators, cabling, mounting hardware and inverters all age differently. Add Canberra weather, seasonal dirt build-up, hail risk and normal electrical wear, and there is a clear case for checking a system before small issues turn into lost generation or safety problems.

When to service solar panels as a rule

For most homes, a professional solar service every few years is a sensible baseline, even if the system appears to be working normally. That does not mean a quick look from the ground. It means a proper inspection and test of the system’s condition, performance and electrical safety.

A newer system with no warnings, stable output and no exposure to major weather events may only need periodic condition checks and any required compliance testing. An older system, or one with a history of faults, usually benefits from more regular attention. Once a system gets past the early years, age-related issues become more common – isolators can deteriorate, seals can fail, panel degradation can become more noticeable, and inverter behaviour can change.

The clearest signs your system needs service sooner

Lower output is one of the most common signs, but it is also one of the easiest to miss. Many owners do not track daily or monthly performance closely enough to spot a gradual decline. Other warning signs include burning smells near the inverter or switchgear, tripping circuits, repeated inverter restarts, unusual noises, or monitoring data that shows irregular performance patterns. These are not watch-and-wait issues. They need electrician-led assessment.

After storms, hail or extreme weather

Weather is one of the biggest reasons a system that looked fine last month may need attention now. Hail can crack glass, damage cells and create faults that reduce output over time. Heavy rain can expose weaknesses in seals, cable entries or rooftop components. Heat and UV also take their toll, particularly on older isolators and external plastics.

In the ACT, storm exposure is a practical reason to service a system earlier than planned. Even when there is no obvious breakage, an inspection after a major weather event can identify hidden damage before it creates safety risks or long-term performance losses. If you have received a notification that your inverter needs testing, that is not optional maintenance to put off until later.

This sort of testing confirms the inverter responds correctly under grid fault conditions. It is a compliance matter, but it is also part of making sure the system is operating safely. Owners sometimes treat this as an admin task rather than a technical one. In reality, it should be carried out properly, with clear records and a licensed electrician handling the work.

A useful service is more than a clean and a glance at the inverter. For most systems, the value comes from electrical testing, condition assessment and fault finding. That may include checking panel condition, inverter operation, isolators, cabling, switchgear, mounting hardware, performance trends and any visible signs of water ingress or heat damage.

The exact scope depends on why the system is being serviced. A compliance visit is different from a fault call-out, and both are different from a full health check on an ageing system. Still, the goal is the same – confirm the system is safe, identify anything affecting output, and give the owner a clear path forward.

That is why electrician-led solar maintenance matters. If a system is underperforming or showing signs of electrical failure, the service needs to go beyond surface-level observations.

Servicing before problems is usually cheaper than servicing after failure

Many owners delay servicing because the system seems to be doing its job. Fair enough. Nobody wants to spend money on maintenance without a clear reason. But solar faults often build slowly, and lost production can quietly cost more than a timely inspection would have.

A single failed string, a degraded isolator or water-affected component may not stop the whole system at once. Instead, it drags down performance or increases risk until the problem becomes obvious. By that stage, repair work can be broader and downtime longer.

There is also the simple financial point: solar is an investment. If the system is meant to cut bills year after year, protecting that return with periodic testing is common sense. The right service at the right time helps avoid avoidable losses.

A practical timing guide for owners

If your system has a fault, visible damage, post-storm concerns or a compliance notice, service it now rather than later. If the system is older, has not had a proper inspection in years, or your savings have slipped without explanation, book a health check. If everything appears normal and the system is relatively young, periodic professional review is still wise, especially before and after high-risk weather periods.

What matters most is not sticking to a rigid date on the calendar. It is understanding that solar systems need occasional professional attention to stay safe, compliant and financially worthwhile.
