A solar inspection is far more useful when the electrician can reach the equipment, review the systemโ€™s history and test it without avoidable delays. If you need to prepare for an electrician solar inspection, the job is not to diagnose the system yourself. It is to make the site safe, accessible and ready for a proper assessment.

A few practical checks before the appointment help the electrician focus on the condition of your solar system and give you clearer advice on any repair work.

How to prepare for an electrician solar inspection

Start by confirming which parts of the system are accessible. Your inverter, solar switchboard or isolators may be in the garage, on an external wall, beside a meter box, under a deck, or in a utility area. The electrician needs clear, safe access to this equipment and to the main switchboard. Move stored items, vehicles, garden tools and household clutter away from these areas before the appointment.

If the inverter is inside a garage, leave enough room to work comfortably in front of it. If it is mounted outside, trim back plants that block the unit or make the ground uneven. Do not dismantle covers, open electrical enclosures or remove protective barriers yourself. A licensed electrician will access the required components safely.

Roof access may also be needed, depending on the reason for the inspection. Make sure gates are unlocked and let the electrician know about any access restrictions, steep driveways, pets, fragile roof sections or recent building work. If a roof hatch is involved, clear the area beneath it and advise of any known issues such as loose insulation, limited ceiling space or a difficult ladder position.

Have your solar paperwork ready

You do not need a complete folder of documents for an inspection, but any records you have can save time and help identify the original design and equipment. Useful information includes the original installation paperwork, inverter and panel warranties, previous inspection reports, fault codes and photographs of earlier damage.

If you received an anti-islanding test notice, have that notice available. It helps confirm what testing is required and whether there is a due date or specific system information to record. Anti-islanding testing verifies that the inverter disconnects correctly from the grid during an outage. This is a safety requirement that protects network workers and supports grid compliance.

Also have your electricity retailer bills or monitoring data available if you are concerned about poor production. A single low-production day does not always mean there is a fault. Cloud cover, winter sun angle, shading and household consumption can all affect what you see. A longer pattern of reduced generation, repeated inverter errors or an unexplained loss of feed-in is more useful diagnostic information.

Note what has changed

Before the electrician arrives, make a short note of anything you have noticed. This could be an inverter alarm, flashing warning light, error message, burnt smell, water marks near equipment, damaged conduit, tripped circuit breaker or a monitoring app that has stopped reporting.

It is also worth noting when the issue began. For example, did production fall after a hailstorm, after roofing work, after a switchboard upgrade or after a new tree began shading the array? These details can point the inspection towards likely causes, including storm damage, water ingress, deteriorated isolators, cable damage or panel faults.

Photographs are helpful where the problem is intermittent. Take a clear image of any inverter display message before it disappears, but do not climb onto the roof or touch damaged cables to get it. If you can safely see cracked panels, loose mounting components or exposed wiring from ground level, mention it when booking and keep clear of the area.

Keep the system operating unless there is a safety concern

For a routine solar health check or compliance test, leave the solar system running as normal. The electrician may need to observe live inverter operation, review production data and complete electrical tests under normal conditions. Turning the system off before the visit can remove useful information.

There are exceptions. If you smell burning, see smoke, hear arcing, notice a damaged electrical enclosure, or believe water has entered an inverter or isolator, treat it as a safety issue. Keep people away, avoid touching equipment and arrange urgent electrical advice. If it is safe to do so and you know the correct shutdown procedure supplied with your system, follow it. Otherwise, do not guess which switches to operate.

A tripped breaker is another situation where repeated resetting is not a solution. One trip may be caused by a temporary event, but a breaker that will not stay on needs investigation. Continually resetting it can mask a developing fault and may cause further damage.

Make access arrangements for the day

An inspection can involve the inverter, DC and AC isolators, switchboard, meter area, monitoring equipment and potentially the roof array. Someone over 18 should be available to provide access and answer basic questions about the systemโ€™s performance. If you cannot attend, arrange access in advance and leave the relevant paperwork where it can be found.

Keep pets secured for the duration of the visit. This is not only about convenience. The electrician may need to move between the switchboard, inverter and exterior equipment several times, carry test equipment, or use a ladder. A clear work area reduces risk and keeps the inspection moving.

If you have added a battery, EV charger, generator connection, heat pump, switchboard upgrade or other electrical work since the solar system was installed, mention it. These additions do not automatically indicate a problem, but they can affect the way the electrician assesses protection settings, circuit arrangement and system operation.

Allow for weather and roof conditions

Electrical testing at the inverter can often proceed in a range of conditions, but roof inspection work depends on safe access. Rain, high winds, wet tiles, frost and extreme heat can make roof work unsuitable. In Canberra, a cold morning can leave roofs slippery even when the day improves later.

If roof access is not safe, the electrician can still complete the work that is practical at ground level and explain what remains to be checked. A proper solar inspection is more than looking at the panels from the ground. Not every finding requires immediate replacement. Sometimes the best outcome is monitoring a minor issue, improving shade management or planning a repair before the next period of severe weather. The right recommendation depends on the systemโ€™s age, condition, safety risk, expected generation loss and cost of rectification.

Avoid quick fixes before the appointment

Do not clean panels with abrasive products, high-pressure water, detergents or improvised tools just before an inspection. Dirty panels can affect output, but heavy soiling is less common than owners expect in normal residential conditions. Cleaning does not resolve inverter faults, damaged connectors, insulation problems or compliance issues.

Likewise, do not tape up cracked conduit, reseal electrical equipment, tighten visible fittings or attempt to replace an isolator. Well-meant temporary work can hide evidence of the fault and make safe assessment harder. Tell the electrician what you have observed and let them determine the correct repair approach.

A well-prepared site gives you more than a faster appointment. It gives the electrician a clearer view of your systemโ€™s condition, helps required testing proceed without disruption, and supports practical repair decisions before a small issue becomes lost generation or a safety concern.
